Vasco da Gama was a Portuguese Navigator (Sines, Extremadura, 1469 ca. -Cochin 1524). In July 1497 he left Belem, near Lisbon, and rounded the Cape of Good Hope; he then crossed the Indian Ocean and landed at Calicut on the west coast of India (May 1498); he replicated the route in 1502.
